Old Hands acknowledges that many of the Barossa‘s finest vineyards are owned by long-time grape growers with years of experience, often with the benefit of advice from past generations. Made in a generous Barossa style, the aromas of blackcurrant and violet are complemented by a rich and plush palate of dark fruits, soft tannin and length of flavor.

Their prestige Cab is a gem. From a fabulous vintage, the grapes are crushed and destemmed into a fermenter for a week, with twice daily pumpovers. Then to French oak, 30% new hogsheads, for a period of 12 to 18 months. Bottled under cork. An opaque maroon, this is meaty, fleshy and showing notes of cassis, florals, old cigar tobacco, blackberries and spices. We have power, concentration and length with abundant and slightly firm tannins. This will cellar superbly – enjoy over the next ten to twenty years. A cracking warm climate Cabernet.

It's wonderfully expressed on the nose, showing cassis, potpourri, tobacco, clove, and cedar characters, followed by a wonderfully weighted palate filled with rich fruit intensity and savoury nuances. Superbly framed by layers of chalky tannins, finishing impressively long and robust. At its best: now to 2038.

Medium-deep crimson.  Chinotto cassis, hint strawberry/violet aromas with underlying savoury notes.  Medium-powered wine with attractive blackcurrant, Parma violet flavours and loose-knit chalky, touch-leafy tannins.  Finishes cedary with attractive mineral length.  Now-2028.

Deep crimson, Pure cassis, touch mocha aromas with brambly/violet. Supple and sweet-fruited with blackcurrant. mocha, parma violet flavours, fine sinewy textures, very good mid-palate volume and mineral length. Drink now–2030

This opaque 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Hands is quite reserved right now and waiting for its time to shine. But it already shows impressive fruit purity – crystal clear black currant, fruit pastilles and a gentile leafy lift. Mouth-filling luscious levels of flavour follow with layers of firm but fine tannins driving a lengthy finish. This wine has a great compact shape, and all the pieces are held tightly together. It will flower over the next decade.

  • The Welland story began with the arrival of the Krieg family, from Germany in 1847. The Kriegs became one of the Barossa’s founding families. Hardworking and successful business people, the family owned the local brickworks, a tannery and also a significant amount of orchard and vineyard at the northern end of the Nuriootpa township.

Welland vineyard was planted in 1923 by the Krieg family Situated on red clay soils, this vineyard for many years supplied premium fruit to well-known Barossa wineries such as Penfolds and Peter Lehmann. The Barossa has more than 550 grape growers. Many of these growers are generational and while the Krieg family never owned or operated a winery themselves, their vineyard became known amongst local winemakers as growing some of the region’s finest Shiraz.

Welland Today In 2017, the last few hectares of this old vineyard were listed for sale as a ‘development site’. The vines were within a whisker of meeting the bulldozers when a group of friends led by Ben and Madeleine Chapman purchased the block. Together they are now in the process of resurrecting this historic old vineyard.
