Gomersal || Barossa Valley
Grenache 100%

15 Years Old Vine
The vineyard is my brother John’s playground, and crammed into the small acreage are 9 different clones of Grenache - cuttings taken (legally!) from vineyards in Barossa, McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek.
For this Grenache, we harvested and made each individual parcel separately to determine the different flavour profiles of each clone, specific to our soils and environment. We settled on a mix of Barossa and McLaren Vale clones to make the final blend.
30% of the fruit was fermented whole bunch, and remainder as whole berry. Cooler fermentation temperatures and 6 months in old French oak puncheons on MLF lees where the very simple but defining winemaking approaches taken to achieve the style we were aiming for.
Colour – Light ruby red core with pink rimAroma – Red fruit, cranberry, cherry, 5 spice, eucalyptus, fresh forest floor, lightly wooded forest after a rain, cured meat, prosciutto, sweet jamon fat, hazelnut, potpourri, red liquorice, floral, esters, youthful, not overly ripe, ironbark bark from whole bunch, fresh bay leaf
Palate – bursting, juicy, black pepper, fine tannin, raspberry, strawberry, tree bark, persistent fine tannin, light body, acid allowing for some juiciness and texture, very fresh fruits, whole bunch gives some savoury elements and peppery spice without being dominant, lees contact evident but is sliced through with tight acid.”
