The Barossa 2023 vintage was the latest picking vintage this millennia. Late Autumn rainin May 2022 followed by plentiful rains during winter filled the soil profile. Above average rainfall continued in Spring with over 50 days of rain leading to more than double the long term average. Combined with moderate temperatures this weather delayed veraison until February. Summer was dry and moderate with few heat spikes meaning the grapes ripened slowly and were picked in the cooler months of March and April.
Crushed without rollers to allow whole berries in to ferment
Fermented in small open tops for 9 days
Gentle pump overs and hand plunging
14 months maturation in old French oak hogsheads on light lees
No fining or acid additions
This wine exhibits a vibrant magenta color and offers notes of dark chocolate, blackcurrants, bay leaves, bergamot, and deep earthy tones. The palate is concentrated and plush, showcasing fleshy morello cherry, licorice, and raspberry fruits, overlaid with vanillin earth, dried herbs, and spice. It finishes with good freshness, fine-grained tannins, and a bright, savory aftertaste.
