McLaren Vale

46% Grenache/ 47% Tempranillo/ 7% Graciano
14% Alc

Grenache 35 & 50 years old vine

A Wet and windy spring affected flowering, resulting in small crops. Cool, damp conditions persisted into early summer but the rain stopped at Christmas allowing the fruit to start ripening while keeping disease pressure low. The 2023 vintage wines exhibit elegance and finesse, with fresh fruit flavours, fine tannins and good acidity.

All parcels were fermented in open fermenters for 7 - 10 days using cultured yeast. Once fermented to dryness, they were pressed off skins and transferred to older French oak barrels. No new oak was used.

The palate is medium weighted showing a mix of fresh berry fruits - raspberry, mulberry and pomegranate, along with warm spice and dried herbs. The wine has vibrant acidity and a lovely line of fine minerally tannin. Drinks well young or cellar for 5-7 years.

  • “An outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity”

    — James Halliday AM, Australia’s foremost wine authority and critic

The Chalk Hill heritage started with the arrival of John Harvey to Adelaide in 1839 when there were around 6,000 people living in Adelaide.

John was the second person to plant grapevines north of Adelaide, preceding the birth of the Barossa and Clare wine growing regions.
Six generations and 185 years later, the Harvey family continue their grape growing and winemaking heritage in McLaren Vale with Chalk Hill.

Chalk Hill is dedicated to crafting small-batch wines that stand apart since 1964.

Rooted in six generations of the Harvey family’s devotion to viticulture, our estate spans six exquisite vineyards across the picturesque McLaren Vale. Each vine contributes to our exceptional portfolio of distinctive wines, reflecting the unique character and quality of our region.

Wines under the Alpha Crucis label are reserved for the best wines we produce. Only after meeting a consistent standard of excellence do grapes and wines get promoted from the Chalk Hill to the Alpha Crucis brand.
